Otoacoustic emissions are also known as OAEs.  The OAE assessment is a simple, efficient and non-invasive objective indicator of healthy outer hair cell cochlear function.

This test is performed by introducing small sounds into the ear canal and measuring the responses of the cochlea.  As part of the audiological diagnostic test battery, OAEs can contribute to differential audiological diagnosis, monitoring the effect of on-going medical treatment and noise exposure maintenance, as well as the beneficial uses in the selection of hearing aids and surgical options.
